A Private Island Retreat on Skye: Discovering Eilean Sionnach

Apr 23, 2025

In a world full of remote getaways, how many can truly say they offer you an island of your own?

Eilean Sionnach Lighthouse Cottage sits quietly on a tidal island off the southern edge of Skye. No causeways. No neighbours. Just you, the sea, and a lighthouse for company. It’s one of the very few places in Scotland where you can stay on a private island and not in a sprawling estate or resort, but in a soul-stirring, story-soaked cottage where the tide decides your schedule and silence is part of the charm.

This isn’t luxury with a wine list and spa treatments. It’s luxury in its purest form: the freedom to disconnect, the gift of space, and the deep sense of calm that only wild landscapes can bring. The cottage is warm and welcoming, with layers of texture, character, and comfort that tell their own quiet stories. Think soft light, wool blankets, a fire that crackles into the night, and windows that frame the ever-changing sea.

You don’t need to be Bear Grylls to enjoy your stay. But if the idea of connecting more deeply with the landscape speaks to you, we’ve got something rather special. This year, we’ve partnered with Yaz and Zeki Basan, local wilderness guides whose knowledge and reverence for the land turn a day outdoors into something unforgettable.

Zeki, raised in the heart of the Cairngorms, shares the old Highland skills of coastal survival—from fire-making with ancient stones to foraging for wild edibles along the shore. Yaz brings the shoreline to life with her culinary wizardry, transforming seaweed and salt into a feast of flavour and tradition. Together, they’ll guide you through a bespoke coastal adventure of story, skill, and connection, with the option to end the day with a dip in the sea, if you’re brave enough.

And while the island feels delightfully off-grid, we’ve made sure you don’t need to pack like you’re heading into the unknown. With a bit of notice, we can arrange grocery delivery from the local village store, or even book a private chef to bring a taste of Skye to your kitchen table. Because sometimes, after a long beach walk, it’s nice to let someone else do the cooking.

Eilean Sionnach is for people who are tired of hotels and hungry for something real. It’s for honeymooners, milestone-markers, and anyone ready to write a new chapter. It’s for those who value privacy, but not pretence. Stillness, but not stagnation.

And if you’re wondering about bringing the family: kids and teens tend to thrive here. Give them a rocky shoreline, a treasure map, and a pair of wellies, and they’ll do the rest. As for dogs, well…this is their heaven. Driftwood to chase, scents to sniff, and no one to tell them to sit still.

If you’re looking for a private island stay in Scotland that offers both escape and elegance, you just found it.

Bookings open for 2025 and 2026.
