Extraordinary Escapes

We’ve been keeping a big secret for quite some time! We’re delighted to finally be able to reveal that you can catch Eilean Sionnach Lighthouse Cottage on a new Channel 4/ALL4 show called Extraordinary Escapes with Sandi Toksvig (episode 3.)

Accompanied by funny woman Sindhu Vee, Sandi visited Eilean Sionnach back in September as part of a three stop tour of Scotland. Clearly the spirits of all the old Lighthouse Keepers were willing us good luck.  The day the production team from Tuesday’s Child arrived was perhaps one of the most spectacular September days we can remember.

It was quite an operation to get the two presenters, eight crew and all their recording equipment across to the island. Luckily we actually have two boats, The MV Paulita (the new boat – the one you would travel on) and the MV Sionnach (we like to refer to as ‘the old work horse.)

Due to the calm sea conditions and our knowledge of their feeding patterns, we knew there was quite a good chance of being able to catch a glimpse of seals and perhaps even the local pod of harbour porpoises that hunt up and down the waters of the Sound of Sleat. What we weren’t expecting was the timely appearance of a Minke Whale!

Back inside the lighthouse cottage, Sandi felt particularly at home when she came across an old iron plaque with a Danish saying on.  It belonged to the old lighthouse keeper’s stove and she kindly translated it for us. It said: ‘When the day is done, I hope that God keeps my fire burning.’ We love the mindful sentiment of those beautiful words, so in keeping with the ‘slow’ style of holiday we encourage all our guests to experience.

So if you’re in the mood for a mindful, slow travel experience surrounded by nature and the elements, why not come and hide away?

Adventure awaits!
